Three New Titles Launched at Xarra Books

MC Khanyi MagubaneOscar BenjaminMphutlane wa BofeloAlison Green

At another vibrant event at Xarra Books, poets and poetry lovers congregated to celebrate the launch of three new titles from Botsotso.

Sections of Six, an anthology comprising the work of six new writers, Bluesology and Bofelosophy by Mphutlane wa Bofelo, and Izinhlungu Zomphefumulo (Emotional Pain) by Bongekile Mbanjwa – who unfortunately was unable to attend the launch.

Triple Book LaunchEmcee Khanyi Magubane – whose own poems appear in Sections of Six – introduced a terrific line up of poets that included Ike Mboneni Muila, Siphiwe ka Ngwenya – a visitor from Zimbabwe – Oscar Benjamin and Alison Green.

In a brief interview with Mphutlane wa Bofelo, Magubane jested with the philosopher poet: “Everyone knows that if you study Philosophy I at university, you can’t fail the subject. You just write what you think you understand and you pass the exam. Isn’t there already too much intellectual rhetoric masquerading as philosophy?”

Bofelo said he believes that each one of us has an informal power which can save the world. “If we organise ourselves, we can make peace.” He sees his poetry as an amalgam of Sufism and Islamic mysticism. “I want to launch God within us. I see the smile of God in the face of my fellow human beings. I dance with Lord Krishna in circles of poetry.”

Magubane asked what inspires his work. “The ideals of Black Consciousness and the possibility of an egalitarian world,” he said. His poem “Put an end to the Pantomine” is his way of looking into the backyard of poetry.
